Cory Doctorow rightly gets very mardy over at Boingboing at the ludicrous anti-piracy warnings shown before movies in the UK, after the 30 minutes of crushingly loud adverts. And then the “Thank You For Not Smoking And Talking” notice (I always add “…And Wanking” in my mind and crack up, but that’s just me…)
He suggests we all take flash photos of the screen when this warning comes up, which is a great idea. It would be nice if we could also hoot with derision.
Apparently they have only just started showing ads before movies at theatres in Canada (what a lovely, civilized country…), but when we were last in Vancouver we had to endure the slightly squirm-inducing spectacle of an usher welcoming us all to the cinema and exhorting us to enjoy the film and so on. I could do without that, to be honest. I know you are only trying to be nice and customer-focused and show a human face and all, but it just freaks me out a bit.

animal collective. best band in the world. no, really. l love them already. i saw them live last week at the shoreditch electricity showrooms with some other really happy people and they were amazing. and panda bear gave me his wig, which was stinky but i was still really pleased to receive it, and i was very annoyed when i lost in on the bus in hackey. but i got a good photo of me wearing it on my phone, so as soon as i can work out how to upload picture from a phone to the internet i can show you. or i could just take a photo of my phone with my digital camera. yes, i’ll do that.
anway. animal collective were amazing. really amazing. like nothing i have heard before. i guess it is folk-psychedelia laced with freakouts, amazingly beautiful harmonic vocal pieces, weird ambient orchestration, pulsing hints at the brilliant kompakt label, purveryors of finest cologne microhouse and fellow gods amongst men. their new album sung tongs is surely the album of the year. unless michael mayer releases an album of his own stuff.
you can buy it at boomkat, who are a great store. they used to be pelicanneck in afflecks palace in manchester in my day.
sorry, i can’t add hyperlinks as i really have to go out. but you know, google…
rabbit or a habit? habit or a riddle?

oh, and we’re moving to canada in july. to toronto. so, erm, hello toronto! can i come and play? i feel like i’m practically canadian already. i know all the words to the first ten rush albums. apart from ‘caress of steel’, which i never really cared for. and if i bump into geddy lee in mec in toronto i would still, like, totally geek out. him and neil peart together would probably slay me. (once i grew a ridiculous little ratty pony tail. because neil peart had one. and i thought he was so cool.
so, erm, anyway, after that disturbing trip into my still-adolescent psyche, yeah. moving to toronto. flying out to vancouver on July 14. Will be in Toronto at the start of September. really looking forward to it.
i would talk more about it, but i have to go and see the rapture live in concert. yay.
oh, and animal collective are the best band in the world.
