We Are The Web

Kevin Kelly has written a great - albeit slightly ‘gee whiz’ - essay on how the interweb is becoming a new cultural force based on mass collaboration. Oh, and how the web may be turning into a vast, self-aware metacortex that rules from the centre of the ultraworld, or something. No really, it works just like a brain works, storing information through relative strengths of connections - hyperlinks or synapses, don’t matter none. I predict that the web will achieve sentience on 24th December 2012. Bring on the eschaton!

More prosaically, this is why I am so excited about working on ’social software’. Go read!

SpeedScript

SpeedScript is an innovative stylus-based text-input (that’s "writing" folks) system for PDAs/Pocket PCs. It claims to be as fast as ten-finger typing with an interface little bigger than a postage stamp. It’s a little complicated to explain how it works (pop-up vowel menus and linking of multiple letters via ‘gestures’) so check out the movie for a demo. Sweet.

Dear Customers…

Nottinghillgate

Apparently this is genuine…nice one.

High Five

How the High Five are helping to combat terror, from the marvellous Triforce. We sometimes do high fives at work, but have to pretend that they are ‘ironic’ so as not to enrage our project manager. Secretly, I really like high fiving and wish people did it more often. Particularly in incongruous situations…I sense a flickr group coming on…

Accelerando!

I’m really enjoying Accelerando by Charles Stross, which he recently released under a creative commons licence, which means you can download it all, for free. It is ‘post-singularity‘ SF and imagines how the future might look if things (computing power, media saturation, general weirdness) just keep on speeding up the way they are now. Lots of fun, and deeply odd. It is the sort of book I would write, if I could actually write, and was extremely smart and somewhat geeky. And you can read it all, for free. w00t.

Partay!

Thanks to everyone who came to our party on saturday - we had a wonderful evening, and hope you did too. Photos will be made available for your viewing pleasure on flickr in the next day or so. The highlight of the evening for me was the conversation about Turing’s Touring Tourette’s Turret Monkey. You probably had to be there…

London Pride

London Pride has been handed down to us.
London Pride is a flower that’s free.
London Pride means our own dear town to us,
And our pride it for ever will be.

Oh Liza!  See the coster barrows,
Vegetable marrows and the fruit piled high.
Oh Liza! Little London sparrows,
Covent Garden Market where the costers cry.

Cockney feet mark the beat of history.
Every street pins a memory down.
Nothing ever can quite replace
The grace of London Town.

There’s a little city flower every spring unfailing
Growing in the crevices by some London railing,
Though it has a Latin name, in town and country-side
We in England call it
London Pride.

London Pride has been handed down to us.
London Pride is a flower that’s free.
London Pride means our own dear town to us,
And our pride it for ever will be.

Hey, lady! When the day is dawning
See the policeman yawning on his lonely beat.
Gay lady! Mayfair in the morning,
Hear your footsteps echo in the empty street.
Early rain and the pavement’s glistening.
All Park Lane in a shimmering gown.
Nothing ever could break or harm
The charm of London Town.

In our city darkened now, street and square and crescent,
We can feel our living past in our shadowed present,
Ghosts beside our starlit Thames who lived and loved and died
Keep throughout the ages
London Pride.

London Pride has been handed down to us.
London Pride is a flower that’s free.
London Pride means our own dear town to us,
And our pride it for ever will be.

Grey city! Stubbornly implanted,
Taken so for granted for a thousand years.
Stay, city! Smokily enchanted,
Cradle of our memories and hopes and fears.

Every Blitz your resistance toughening,
From the Ritz to the Anchor and Crown,
Nothing ever could override
The pride of London Town.

- Noel Coward
