Rik’s Podcast #4 - Louis Atkins techno mix

Good lordy it is another podcast in my series. Mikey Lambe will be amazed at my industry, I would imagine. ANYWAY, this mix brings you the mad skills of my very good friend Louis “as in ‘Juan’, but not actually related” Atkins, resident of Bethnal Green, native of Copacabana, Rio, ‘Brasil’ (sic, and who am I to argue…) - all round good chap and ace techno/electro producer and DJ. Funnily enough, and quite meta, I am blogging this podcast from Louis’ room, on Louis’ computer, which has a ‘Brasilian’ keyboard, so if my punctuation goes a bit pear-shaped, that’s why. Louis is LITERALLY doing a mix for, me, live, while I blog about his mix which is the feature of this podcast. See: It went meta… did you see where it did that? (Option-W to do a question mark. How completely intuitive. ANYWAY…) ANYWAY. Here is the set list for the mix you are about to download and then listen to, somewhat slack-jawed at it’s amazingness.

TRACKLIST!

  1. Michael Mayer - Love Food (Kompakt)
  2. M.A.N.D.Y vs. Booka Shade feat. Laurie Anderson - Oh Superman (Get Physical)
  3. Rekorder - 9.1 (Rekorder)
  4. Teflon - The Wombat (Rebelone)
  5. Lutzenkirchen - Kobalt (Craftmusic)
  6. Jurgen Paape + Boy Schaufler/Gesang - We Love (Kompakt)
  7. Trentemoller - Moan *Radio Slave remix for k/instrumental (Poker Flat)
  8. Audion - Fire (Cocoon)
…it starts to get quite fucked up around here…
  9. Supermayer - Two Of Us (Kompakt)
    …pass the bong, dude…
  10. Simon Baker - Plastik (Playhouse)
  11. Tiefschwarz - Original *Carl Craig remix (Souvenir)
  12. Adam Beyer - AWC Pt.1 (Plus8 )
  13. Danilo Vigorito - Temperance (Intelligence)
  14. Kabale und Liebe & Daniel Sanchez - Mumbling Yeah (Area Remote)
  15. Kaliber - 13.1 (Kaliber)
  16. Cobblestone Jazz - W (Cocoon/K7/Wagon Repair - go nuts)
  17. Craig Torrance & Philip Hochstrate - Shrinkage *Samim remix (4twenty)
  18. Gui Boratto - Beautiful Life (Kompakt)

There, isn’t that awesome-sounding? (Option-W, remember…) If you enjoyed this mix why not subscribe to my podcast in ‘like iTunes and shit’ by simply clicking the iTunes feed at top of my left column, right here? Then you will LITERALLY receive a hot injection of ”fresh’ new ‘beats’ approximately every week, delivered straight to your iTunes, without you having to lift so much as a finger, literally. Isn’t technology awesome?

So, enjoy Louis’ mix, he is a wicked DJ.

Coming up next, a mix by the mysterious entity known only as ‘Genki‘…

Rik’s Podcast #1 - “I Lick Your Spine” by DJ Omar

OK, here we go. Although I love techno music I have never tried my hand at creating my own mixes, and realistically, I probably never will. Luckily, I have lots of talented DJ type friends who can do that kind of thing for me. So this is the first in a fairly regular series of podcasts where I will be piggybacking on the talent of these friends in order to bask in their reflected glory, and hopefully expose them to a wider audience. Because they really are very good, all of them. As I’m sure you will agree once you check out their mixes.

First up is DJ Omar - aka Ole Martin Vilberg from Oslo, Norway, who has recently done not one, nor even two, but THREE marvellous, acid tinged hour long excursions to a happy techno place. I met Ole Martin and his equally lovely partner Tonje in the T Bar in London’s fashionable/skanky Shoreditch - we hit it off and spent a fantastic night dancing exuberantly, shrieking “SKRAEVSYLTE” (google it…) at the top of our lungs and generally being quite silly.

Anyway, turns out he an ace DJ. And to prove it, I’m going to start this whole podcast series with his three recent mixes. I spoil you, I really do. First up is ‘The Sirup Mix‘ ‘I Lick Your Spine’.

[Update - Ole Martin mislabelled the mixes but now we got it straight, and we also have track listings! If you want to rename your MP3s - assuming you downloaded them, The Sirup Mix is actually I Lick Your Spine, and what WAS I Lick Your Spine is Actually ‘In The Moog For Love’. Glad we cleared that up…]

Tracklisting:

  1. Luciano – Fourges Et Sabres
  2. Let’s Go Outside – I’ll Lick Your Spine (Repeat Repeat rmx)
  3. Ben Westbeech – Hang Around (Karizma rmx)
  4. Rework – Love Love Love Yeah (Chloè rmx)
  5. Wouldbenice – One Cell
  6. Jurgen Paape – Nord
  7. Larsson - Off Voices
  8. Shonky – Olympia
  9. Dusty Kid – Kore
  10. Shane Berry – Fillertet 2 (Gabriel Ananda rmx)

my beautiful life among the plastic people

I’m massively stoked about seeing Sao Paulo, Brazil’s very own favourite (probably) techno son Gui Boratto live tonight at Plastic People as part of the Kompakt party night (also featuring Chilean Matias Aguayo, gotta love that South American Techno vibe…) from the lovely people at allez-allez.

Boratto’s Chromophobia is my techno album of 2007 (so far) and I never tire of listening to it. it’s just so goddam beautiful! Word on the grapevine (ok, the intarwebs) is that Boratto is AMAZING live, so I’m almost literally spazziing out with anticipation. (Video clips after the ‘jump’…) Continue reading ‘my beautiful life among the plastic people’

Low Tech Predator

My good friend Rico Casazza has a new track out - “Low Tech Predator” - on the first release from the brand new Serialism label,  straight outta Shoreditch, bringing you finest quality bespoke minimal/tech house. You can pick it up at Juno, and on vinyl in all discerning record stores soon. Or, thanks to the magic of the intarwebs,  Martin Laine’s nifty Audio Player Wordpress plug-in, and this very blog, you can enjoy it right here:

[audio:low_tech_predator.mp3]

Ideally of course, you’ll want to hear it on the “dancefloor”,  so why not get along to  Audio Bass at Rhythm Factory on 10 August, where Rico will be ’spinning’ along with other luminaries of the East London underground minimal/techno/electro/whathaveyou scene.

ULTRA BRAiN

A few months ago at ourdisco I met a Japanese ‘Neo Punk’ band called ULTRA BRAiN. They were immediately noticeable due to their very funky matching outfits, which you will be able to see in the YouTube video below for their song ‘GhostBusterz’. Anyway, it turned out that they were recording their debut LP at Strongroom studios in East London, hence their appearance at Our Disco (which is, of course, the night out of choice for the discerning future-forward hipster living 10 seconds in the future. Like me, and ULTRA BRAiN. Anyway, for some reason I thought of them again this morning and did a quick googling and found that they now have a myspace page where you can listen to the fabulous ‘Ninja Night School’ and maybe even be their friend, if you are into that whole myspace friendy thing. (If you are, I’m here. Be my friend. Go on. I joined for research purposes, of course.

Anyways, watch the video then I’ll carry on…don’t worry, I’ll wait for you…

Wasn’t that fun? Refreshing. Like a latter day super-psychedelic punk noise Japanese Monkees, only even better. Well, it seems their debut album ‘Neo Punk’ is out on 22 March. I would implore you to get hold of a copy by any means necessary. Or just by buying it online. I’ll be taking advantage of my Man in Kyoto (hi Mikey!).

Proving that they are not only “the Best Band in the World” but also canny commercial operators, they also have a range of fabulous merchandise available at www.ultrabrain.tv, including t-shirts, hoodies, collegiate jackets and caps, but sadly, as yet, no crash helmets.

Not only are they the BEST BAND IN THE WORLD, they were also lovely chaps to a man - I was in Friendly Stranger mode (i.e. over the herbacious border) and had quite a few little chats with them. My favourite moment is when I asked if they were noisy and they replied as one, with big beaming grins “VERY noisy, yes!”

ULTRA BRAiN - the BEST BAND IN THE WORLD.

Our Disco Podcasts

My favourite night out - And Did We Mention Our Disco? - which happens every Friday at my favourite tiny underground club with a killer soundsystem, cheap beer and lovely, cosmopolitan clientele - Plastic People in London’s fashionable Shoreditch - is now doing Podcasts, which is nice. iTunes users, click this link and subscribe. What kind of music, you ask? Well, to quote the website, you can expect "the freshest sounds in town: punk, funk, no wave, rock and roll, fucked up house, sleazy electro or mutant disco." You betcha! Nice one, Den.

Animal Collective Feels Good To Me

Saw Animal Collective last night at the Scala and it was, IMHO, fricken awesome. They took a little while to ramp things up, starting kinda slow and ambient, but the second half was a classic AC freakout - primal drumming, trancey, highly processed vocals and guitars, with Geologist (or was it Deakin?) apparently mixing everything on the fly. Sweet. They seem like such nice boys, too. Their new album, Feels, is pretty good, too, although I’ve only listened to it a few times thus far.

And tonight The Wrens are playing! The Wrens! The best band named after a small, hedge-dwelling bird ever. Woo-hoo! If you haven’t heard it yet, might I humbly suggest you give Meadowlands a listen. Or ten. It’s a wonderful album.

You wait months for a good gig to come along, then two coming along on consecutive days…
