It seems to have hardly merited a mention on most of the end of the year album lists I have bothered to look at, which is a shame as I think it is one of the best hard/psychedelic rock albums I’ve heard in the last few years. Hailing from Vancouver, Canada, you may be unsurprised to learn that it is a very bong-friendly album, with the epic Bright Lights clocking in at over 16 minutes, but don’t go thinking it is all self-indulgent stoner noodling. Only some of it is, and even then it is pretty damn good noodling. Lead singer/guitarist Stephen McBean has chops to match his beard, and manages to coax classic riff after classic riff from his ‘axe’ (man)… ok, I admit it, I’m testing out amazon’s associate widget so this is not really a PROPER review right now, but it will be just as soon as I don’t have a nine-month-old crawling all over me. Still, feel free to go buy it now if you want to make me rich beyond my wildest dreams. If amazon sold bongs as well I’d be laughing…

OK – click that and you can play any mp3 linked to on the current page, or download if you prefer. Nifty, eh? Shame Yahoo! won’t be innovating any more seeing as they sacked everyone at Brickhouse innovation centre. But I digress.

Hope you like the mix, it’s electrotastic.

Good Lord! A blog post! I thought I was dead, or something. Anyway, back again. Who knows how long for this time? I’ve just been sent a most excellent mix by my Norwegian friend Ole-Martin (a.k.a. DJ Omar) so I thought I’d share it with you, gentle reader/listener. I’ve only gone and upgraded my blog media hosting to Amazon’s S3 service, so tell your friends as well – I can handle the bandwidth now, for real. (For the geeks who might care – I’m using the S3 Firefox plugin to manage uploads and also the S3 WordPress plugin which allows you to seamlessly use S3 storage when you upload media within WordPress. Nice.)

Massively passé though it is these days, I’m going to try to blog again semi-regularly, I might even try to make it useful by doing ‘screencasts’ of geeky stuff or mac stuff now and again. One cannot live by tweets alone.

Without further ado, some music!!!

Then you will LITERALLY receive a hot injection of ''fresh' new 'beats' approximately every week, delivered straight to your iTunes, without you having to lift so much as a finger, literally.

OK, here we go. Although I love techno music I have never tried my hand at creating my own mixes, and realistically, I probably never will. Luckily, I have lots of talented DJ type friends who can do that kind of thing for me. So this is the first in a fairly regular series of podcasts where I will be piggybacking on the talent of these friends in order to bask in their reflected glory, and hopefully expose them to a wider audience. Because they really are very good, all of them. As I’m sure you will agree once you check out their mixes.

First up is DJ Omar – aka Ole Martin Vilberg from Oslo, Norway, who has recently done not one, nor even two, but THREE marvellous, acid tinged hour long excursions to a happy techno place. I met Ole Martin and his equally lovely partner Tonje in the T Bar in London’s fashionable/skanky Shoreditch – we hit it off and spent a fantastic night dancing exuberantly, shrieking “SKRAEVSYLTE” (google it…) at the top of our lungs and generally being quite silly.

Anyway, turns out he an ace DJ. And to prove it, I’m going to start this whole podcast series with his three recent mixes. I spoil you, I really do. First up is ‘<strike>The Sirup Mix</strike>‘ ‘I Lick Your Spine’.

[Update - Ole Martin mislabelled the mixes but now we got it straight, and we also have track listings! If you want to rename your MP3s - assuming you downloaded them, The Sirup Mix is actually I Lick Your Spine, and what WAS I Lick Your Spine is Actually 'In The Moog For Love'. Glad we cleared that up...]

I’m massively stoked about seeing Sao Paulo, Brazil’s very own favourite (probably) techno son Gui Boratto live tonight at Plastic People as part of the Kompakt party night (also featuring Chilean Matias Aguayo, gotta love that South American Techno vibe…) from the lovely people at allez-allez.

Boratto’s Chromophobia is my techno album of 2007 (so far) and I never tire of listening to it. it’s just so goddam beautiful! Word on the grapevine (ok, the intarwebs) is that Boratto is AMAZING live, so I’m almost literally spazziing out with anticipation. (Video clips after the ‘jump’…)

I haven’t been to Plastic People for absolutely ages so will be nice to return to an old haunt for such a special occassion. (PP also hosts the underground – albeit increasingly famous – dubstep night fwd, which I MUST check out one day, cos I love dubstep, innit…)

Although not particularly representative of the rest of the album, the standout track on Chromophobia for most people is the delightful, summery, happy, indie-shoegazetronica-meets-techno swirl of Beautiful Life…check out the lovely video:

(Thank you Anarchy Media Player for allowing me to embed Youtube videos without WordPress layout breaking horribly!) Now that I CAN embed videos with ease, here is Gui performing Beautiful Life live at Warung, which is this club in a big wooden Indonesian long-house on the beach somewhere in Brazil. Yeah, it sounds great, but my Brazilian source Louis Atkins (an ace techno DJ/Producer in his own right) reliably informs me it is full of undesirable types…ANYWAY, Gui at Warung:
